My name is Chetwyn Clarke, but I mostly go by Chet. I’m 36 years old and originally from Barbados, but currently live in Panama where I work as a pilot for Copa Airlines.
I’ve been listening to David’s podcasts for about 3 years, and have enjoyed the insight that he’s provided. I previously was a member of Money for the Rest of Us Plus, but, after the Panama Papers broke, it was a bit difficult to find ways to personally manage my investments since a lot of brokers were not dealing with people that resided in Panama. Within the past 4 months, a few things have changed causing me to be a bit more serious about managing my family’s investments and to revisit Money for the Rest of Us Plus: we were able to find an online broker that accepts people residing in Panama, and, more importantly, we welcomed our first child to our family.
As for our financial journey, in Barbados we have a strong saving culture, so my wife and I grew up hearing about “saving for a rainy day”. We maintained that philosophy, paid off our student loans fairly early, and have been living debt free since 2014. We really had no idea where to start, and have only recently (within the last year) started to dip our feet into the investment waters. Our portfolio is therefore very heavy on cash and cash equivalents (80%). With the resources that David provides, we are hoping to diversify, and create a healthy portfolio that will carry us through our retirement.
I’m looking forward to learning from all of you, and hope to enjoy the investing journey.
Thanks, Chet for sharing your story. Welcome back.
